Abstract

Thirty years of research on gender differences, or The language of women and sex differenciation in language, speech and imagery
Langage et Société n° 106, December 2003, p. 33-61
We begin by a reminder of the work conducted on sexual differences and language on one hand, sexism in language, discourse, images and mentalities on the other. Linguistic studies on variation and speech : how does language refer to women, how does it talk about them, how does it make them invisible (the question of morphological gender); how do everyday speech and the media call women, how do they refer to them (cf. the problem of the feminisation of professional titles in French). And semiological studies (or the social imagination – Castoriadis), images given to or imposed upon women (speech analysis, analysis of advertising).
